Why Selling to the Emotions Work

As a child, whenever our family had to make a major purchasing decision, my mom always insisted that “We need to sleep on it.” She knew that she had to be removed from making an emotional decision to making one of logic. Her next day’s decision was almost always right.

In today’s “get it done now” world, quicker decisions are made. But decisions coming from anger, hurt, love, worry, or fear are often followed days later by “I’m sorry. I just let my emotions get the best of me.” There is a reason for the Lemon laws.

Salespeople, marketers, and advertisers understand the psychology of selling to the emotions in order to disconnect the rational, logical left-brain. Any time you hear the words “How does that make you feel?” you know someone has just flipped your emotional switch. Don’t let your feelings get in the way.
